24 February, 2013
KUNDUZ: The bodies of 10 Afghan nationals recently hanged to death in Iran were buried in Kalafgan district of Takhar province on Saturday. They were executed by the government of Iran on charges of drug-peddling, a tribal elder of Kalafgan Haji Abdul Zahir told the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP). He said the area residents staged a protest demonstration against Iran, demanding of the Afghan government and human rights organisations to take steps for release of hundreds of more such people of the Kalafgan district currently imprisoned in Iran. Condemning the international community and Afghan government for what he said not providing chances of employment for the citizens for the 11 years, he said it had made the people to go abroad for earning their livelihood. He alleged bodies of 80 residents of Kalafgan district had been brought to Afghanistan after being executed in Iran over the past eight months. Iran has executed Afghan nationals in the past for what the Iranian authorities say their involvement in murders and drug-peddling. The Wolesi Jirga of Afghanistan has repeatedly condemned executions of Afghan people in Iran besides demanding the Afghan foreign ministry to ask Iran for explanation. Officials say about 3000 Afghan nationals are currently facing such charges in Iran. Officials have not said anything about these executions so far. End.
