LAHORE: Following the decision of the Lahore High Court, asking the authorities to link rate of sugarcane with its recovery, the Punjab government has called a meeting of Cane Board on Saturday (tomorrow), comprising the representatives from growers' bodies as well as the millers to finalise a policy in this regard, official sources said.

It is longstanding demand of both industry as well as farmers to devise a system which could link support price of sugarcane with its recovery, as it would enhance not only sugar production, but also making country sufficient of stock and export surplus produce, but also increase the value of crop.

Sugar millers think that the sugar and sugarcane prices issue can be overcome by linking systems of sugarcane and sugar on the pattern, which rest of the world is doing, i.e., vertical expansion in the sugarcane research facilities.

As increase of sugarcane prices directly affects sugar prices and if per acre yield of sugarcane is increased then the farmers would be able to get more benefit out of their production instead of concentrating on the sugarcane prices, which would then be able to bring a control on the sugar prices.

Both these issues can be tackled with the increase in research, technology and yields of sugarcane. They said that there is urgent need of vertical expansion in per acre yield rather than horizontal increase because if the prices of sugarcane increase, increase in sugar price would be inevitable.

The sugarcane growers and millers asked the government to implement court order of linkage of sugarcane prices with recovery in its true spirit, as in this way the farmers will get proper price of their crop, besides increasing sugar production, resulting into low sugar price at retail level.

They said all countries including India sugarcane payments are fixed on recovery level. Everywhere, the average sugarcane recovery level is about 14 per cent per 40kg but in Pakistan this ratio is around 9.5 per cent.

When government makes it necessary for farmers to cultivate high quality cane, they will implement instructions for better payment and this will also benefit the millers, they added.

The meeting on Saturday will discuss the linkage of sugarcane prices with recovery and both sides to appeal to CM Punjab that prices of sugarcane should be linked with recovery. They would also ask CM to take revolutionary steps to take forward research and development of sugarcane for increase in per acre yield and sugar contents in sugarcane.

Agri Forum of Pakistan has also termed the linking of sugarcane price to sugar recovery a step in the right direction. Commenting on the court's decision, the chairman AFP Ibrahim Mughal said this would encourage farmers to produce good quality sugarcane.

End.
