ISLAMABAD: The overall gas situation in the country was reviewed during a high level meeting held at the Prime Minister (PM) House on Wednesday, with Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in chair.
The meeting was told there was likely to be gas shortage in the country during the coming winter season due to increased domestic consumption, depletion of existing resources and non-addition of gas from existing and new resources. The meeting discussed various proposals to minimise the impact of gas shortage during winter.
PM said the nation would have to make adjustments in view of the shortage that was anticipated during November and February because certain sectors would have to be prioritised for gas supply in view of the national imperatives.
He decided a committee be constituted which would be headed by Minister for Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh includes Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira and adviser to the PM on Petroleum Dr Asim Hussain. Stakeholders from the private sector will also be included.
The PM directed the committee to hold meetings and prepare doable proposals. The proposals should ensure the impending shortage should have minimum impact on the economy and industry. He directed the committee to come up with the proposals within a week so that we could grapple with the situation well in time.
