Nepra okays up to Rs 3.85/unit hike in Pesco tariff

ISLAMABAD: Expressing grave concern over increasing power theft, National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a hike of up to Rs3.85/unit in the power tariff of Peshawar Electric Supply Company for the ongoing financial year 2012-13.
ISLAMABAD: Expressing grave concern over increasing power theft, National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a hike of up to Rs3.85/unit in the power tariff of Peshawar Electric Supply Company for the ongoing financial year 2012-13. Under the approved hike in tariff for all categories of power consumers of the Peshawar Electric Supply Company, there has been Rs1/unit increase in the tariff of domestic consumers using 50 units while Rs1 to Rs3.85 for rest of the categories. And, industrial consumers will witness Rs1.50/unit raise while Re1/unit for commercial consumers and Rs2.70/unit increase in the price of per unit of Peshawar Electric Supply Company with effect to this approval of the regulatory authority (NEPRA).Expressing its deep concerns over not controlling power theft, the NEPRA has approved this hike in the tariff of Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) on account of company expenses, power generation cost and power theft.
Documents also informed that though NEPRA had advised the PESCO to bring power theft at 28 per cent level during ongoing financial year 2012-13 yet it also believes that almost 33 per cent of power is being stolen in PESCO region as the company failed to control power theft. And, if the federal government declined to provide Rs 40 billion subsidy to power sector then the power consumers will have to bear this brunt.
