In the history of our country, May 12, 2007 will go down as one of the darkest days. On the terrible day, peaceful protestors exercising their constitutional right to freedom of movement were proceeding towards the airport when suspected members of the ruling coalition known as the MQM ambushed them.

According to participants in the rally to receive Chief Justice Ifthikar Chaudhry, suspected MQM terrorists took over the road from Sharae Faisal to Malir. Regrettably, elements of the Police and Rangers reportedly providing cover to the MQM terrorists who were firing to kill and injure PPP and ANP supporters. Those supporters were besieged when four buses and trucks on Karachi's main road Shahrah e Faisal was blocked. Prepositioned terrorists on bridges and elsewhere began firing on them.

The Judiciary needs to identify the terrorist elements and those members of law enforcement who are suspected of colluding with them through a suo moto inquiry. Further to check the veracity of the allegation that this cover was being provided to the terrorists on the directives of an un-elected Advisor of the Chief Minister Sindh.

This was not the first time that a rally was disrupted. Earlier in 2005 when Senator Zardari returned to Pakistan, thousands of people were arrested, baton charged, tear gassed and railways, buses, cars etc stopped or impounded.

No one took notice then. The neglect to take notice then simply emboldened the supporters of state terrorism. Consequently much worse happened on May 12, 2007 when the dogs of death were let loose to shed the blood of innocents in Karachi. That blood now calls out to our collective conscience to demonstrate the will to stop the bedlam or risk terrorists slowly taking over different parts of our country.

It appears that instead of the writ of government providing safety and security to the citizens, different parts of the country have been parcelled out to different mafias, terrorists, thugs and hoodlums by the present regime. The tribal areas have been more or less conceded to the pro Taliban forces while the regime signs a peace treaty with them. In return they take the law into their own hands murdering those who think differently to them while law enforcement is a silent spectator.

In Tank, Bannu and Malakand different groups of terrorists have been conceded territory and intimidate the population taking the law into their own hands. The Police stand by.

Parts of the capital Islamabad has been conceded to the extremists led by the Imam of Lal Masjid. Here, hiding under the name of religion, they grab land, kidnap citizens, including policemen with impunity, patrol the streets intimidating women and threaten barbers, beauticians and those belonging to the entertainment industry while the police once again stand as bystanders.

The Pakistan Peoples Party believes the country has a right to know why the Karachi Police were largely disarmed on May 12, 2007 and on whose orders. Those brutally killed now number forty two. The Judiciary should take suo moto notice to save itself, to save innocents and to save the country. Unless the Higher Judiciary intervenes much worse will happen the next time round. Terrorists are encouraged when the state fails to act against them.

The shocking part of the episode is that even Honourable members of the Higher Judiciary were not spared. It is astonishing to hear that the Corp Commander failed to respond to a court summons on security grounds.

Given the number of men the Corp Commander has under him it is difficult to accept that the army could not have taken him securely to the High Court where the judiciary was trying to come to the assistance of the dead and the dying. The situation was reminiscent of in Dacca before the army operation of 1970 where the Mukhti Bahini took control of the streets and terrorized citizens.

Senior members of the Bar who have served justice for decades were forced to flee and take shelter. Fire was set to a part of the Bar itself. Undoubtedly the constitutional machinery of government irretrievably broke down as outlined under the Constitution.

Democratic governments were overthrow in the past on fallacious grounds of an irretrievable breakdown of the constitutional machinery. However, the grounds now are real for the machinery of government collapsed on May 12, 2007. The Inspector General Police is reported to have told the Judiciary that he was "helpless" to stop the bloodshed and mayhem, which apparently had political cover and collusion.

This raises the very serious spectre of whether the country can afford a government that colludes in murder attempts and refuses to file criminal cases by those who are murdered or victims of murder attempts. Unfortunately this is what is happening with the entire government protecting criminal elements not just on the massive scale of May 12, 2007 but in several incidents even earlier. This proves that unless someone acts there is no one to stop the growing anarchy over which the present regime presides. The only institution that offers some hope while others around collapse is the judiciary. It is therefore the hope of the Nation that the judiciary will act to intervene and save the Nation from terrorism and dictatorship.

Therefore the Pakistan Peoples Party asks the Judiciary to come to the aid of the citizens in accordance with the Constitution and take suo moto notice of the events of May 12, 2007. The least that can be done to restore public confidence following the irretrievable breakdown of the constitutional machinery is to hold a suo moto inquiry into those who colluded or conspired in the murder and arson that stained the streets of Karachi scarlet on one of the blackest days of Pakistan's history.

End.

Terrorists Attack

BB has named MQM as terrorists whereas they are a coalition party of the government. If they are involved in that 12th May attacks who were on the otherside holding guns in their hands on the car of Sheri Rehman? Who attacked first that is to be found out by the authorities before giving judgement are a blame on MQM, no doubt this party has been in the limelights before having hatred against Punjabis, Sindhis and Pathans. BB is not there but surely must have seen Sheri Rehman's car and PPPP gunmen shooting on International TV. This is not the first day in the history of Pakistan such incidents happened in the past as well. The blackest day was when Bhutto told Mujiburrehman to go to East Pakistan and take over the charge of that wing and he will be PM of West Pakistan. Succession of East Pakistan was to be blamed to Bhutto and that goes down in the history when one arm of the country was broken away. The biggest loss to Pakistan which was done by BB's father.Blame game is not fair and let the judiciary find out who are the culprits and where are they hiding. BB is mentioning of democratic governments of her time and Nawaz Sharif when both party leaders and their relations were busy in nicking, plaundering funds of the poor nation and taking them abroad to buy Mansions and properties. They both were not interested to run the country but busy in cripling the country. BB's spouse was the most corrupt man in her time in the government who made illegal money from any source where he could lay his hands and was no one there to ask him any question. Sweep before your own door before you start blaming others. MQM might have done something wrong I am not siding them but at the same time PPPP and other political parties were not sitting their hands tied up. They must have attacked each other and why Police should endanger their lives when political leaders are not interesting to remain law abiding citizens. We all will see when Imran Khan takes Altaf Hussain to court in UK. If there is anything there on 12th or prior to that Altaf Hussain has instigated or incited violence in Karachi will pay a high price. UK does not allow terrorists to stay in the country.

BB's dady disfiguered the very constitution he had got passed.

Ardeshir Cowasjee is on record that Mr. Bhutto got he Consttution amended to suit his requirements the very next day it was passed. The country needs leadership in the mould of Quaid-e-Azam. The reason why the Muslim Yniversity at Aligarh blossomed and bloomed was that Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was succeeded by many a renowned vice chancellors and their deputies. Quaid-e-Azam's Pakistan will InshaAllah ride off the crisis and will have great renaissance leaders to take it to its heights. BB and Nawaz Sharif might suffice with footnotes in history.

Sher Mohammad, Pakistan - 28 May, 2007

We all know that all those who ruled and all those who are powerful in Pakistan have used force against their oppnents. So darkest days in country's history are as many as (365)(60).We the common Pakistanis are waiting for good day. They will not come untill the feudal, urban fascists, peers, the generals and the bureacrats know that politics is the superior most profession responisble for intellectual, physical and social growth of the people. It is above greed and creed.

INDIAN AGENTS IN ACTION

SUCH A THING CAN NEVER HAPPEN IN A HIGHLY PRINCIPLED COUNTRY LIKE PAKISTAN WHERE BROTHERHOOD IS THE CREED OF THE NATION. THE PROBLEMS WERE CREATED BY INDIAN AGENTS AND THEIR MONEY MEN THE DAL KHOR BANIAS TO MALIGN THE IMPORTANT COUNTRY OF PAKISTAN. PAKISTAN'S TRUE POTENTIAL AND INTERNATIONAL RESPECT WILL BE REALIZED WHEN INDIA IS MADE TO BITE THE DUST AND ALL HINDUS ARE CONVERTED TO THE ONLY WORTHY RELIGION OF THE WORLD - ISLAM.

People's Party's own hands are drenched in blood as well

May 12th was no doubt a sad day in Pak history. MQM goons didn't need to mow down the protesters. One lowly protest can never change the political landscape and bitter divisions in Karachi.

However PM Benazir should not forget that PPP's own hands are drenched in blood of its political opponents.

Political rivals were persecuted during PM Benazir's time and also during PM Zulfikar's time. Who can forget the establishment of torture chambers in Dulai camp, or the cold blooded murder of Mr. Kasuri.

I guess this is the terrible fate of Pakistan, that no one truly believes in political decency. Not now, and not ever.

May be PM Benazir can alter that trend by organizing PPP along true democratic lines. May be PM Benazir can retire and let some fresh blood come up and lead the party.

Don't we all deserve to have a democratic PPP before letting it rule the country?

Peace.

Well

Who is behind it?

kadar khan, Pakistan - 29 May, 2007

Benazir shouldn't cope with dictators

Benazir is right but he shouldn't cope with dictators, who are behind MQM! Otherwise her future will be as worst as MQM's current polices are letting them down.

Z.Billo, Pakistan - 30 May, 2007

Who is to be blamed?

People, Notice 3 things about this article written by BB (is it at all? May be some "smart" chamcha of her is the writer?). Anyway notice this:
1. Why is the mad general in power? Is it not because of the policies of BB and her "brother" NS? If these two had been a little bit, not much just little bit, better leaders the generals would never have taken the chanse to take. Because the people of Pakistan would have protected their democratic elected great leaders. The poeple of Pakistan would have int ki int beja deni thi army ki.
So they must blame each other for the genral`s taking over. Why did not millions of people come out on streets when these siblings were removed? FOUR4 times.
2.Smart and coward as she is, she only almost explain what happened in Karachi 12th of May. SHE DOES NOT SAY A WORD ABOUT WAHAT SHE IS GOING TO DO. How gundas like Altaf should be dealt with etc etc etc...
Why is she not saying that harder means should be used aganist the MQM or Altaf? Because when in power she may need his support, there fore she does not want to burn all the bridges NOW. What shall one call this kind of horse-tradeing lover politicans? Has she changed a bit? Or is everything the old way and normal way regarding our civilian politicans?
In this matter Imran KHAN had at least the guts enough to say the truth. Even though he risked his life, he said what should have been said by any serious leader.
3.What really does BB has, that Pakistan will not do without? ANY coalifications otther than that she is daughter of a great leader? Why can not she rest before she had compleetly danaged the party of her fahter? Let some smart people take over and she stand behinde like Sonia Ghandi?

Mr Allah Ditta, Norway - 30 May, 2007

Ahan

Very good Ma'am.

Im sure on your third try or the third try of Mr. Nawaz Sharif, your partner in the charter of democracy, you guys will make Pakistan a different Pakistan on the points you blast the current sarkaar.

You do write well waisay. I would request you to write such a report, by which i mean a report which includes all the sad events in Pakistan from a specified time, and who was at fault, very impartially please. I would be really grateful.

And please do come in power soon, one of the gangs has to very soon, it would be very interesting to compare the rule of your gang to the rule of the present gang of forty thieves, even though we have two terms of yours to compare to, but hey, lets have a third one, for records purposes.

Ahmed Sajjad, Pakistan - 31 May, 2007

I'm going to be frank

I would rather trust an Army general than a corrupt ex-prime minister who not only made millions in "commission" on questionable contracts but ran away from the country twice when the heat got too much. Mrs Bhutto, thank you but NO THANK YOU! You are better off living in your fancy apartments in London and Dubai.
