Stopping the Suicide Bomber

17 March, 2008

We have to condemn with loud voices, open speech and fearless thinking as much the terrorists as the system that spawns them.

Young men, full of youth’s vigor, pumped up and brainwashed by patriotism or religious zeal always have, and always will, kill and be killed. That is a no-brainer. The question is why such sudden spates come in nations’ histories in which atrocities spike up sharply tainting every denizen of that state.

In the past, we heard people refer to the strong link between terrorism and poverty. According to recent studies done by political researchers however, the data does not support this fact any more. Why rich Saudi young men would blow themselves up, they ask. Political researchers now agree that terrorism is more linked to levels of political freedom a nation allows to its citizens, especially in those countries that are experiencing transition from autocracy to political freedom.

There is a flaw in this argument.

The researchers forget that it is in the soil of these politically repressed societies that the seeds of want, ignorance, squalor, disease and idleness sprout. A single factor of these by itself or any combination thereof can trigger the birth of the hydra-headed monster called terrorism. Pakistan is a case in point.

For much of its life, Pakistan has been a typical example of states with tightly controlled dictatorial regimes that crush the will of its people under the jack boot of its military. The many long years of unchecked despotism have indeed spawned in Pakistan a class of people who live solely for their own interest, who have no other stimulant than material satisfaction and no other cult than that of gold. The politics of this upper class is to, by hook or by crook, provide for themselves the necessary security so as to continue to enjoy their untold riches.

The natural revolt of the suppressed classes, on the other hand, and their assault on power that has abused them for all these years is not merely for love of liberty. It is also for a deep-seated hatred of those who accord to themselves all freedoms, who possess without merit the lion’s share of the nation’s wealth. Trampled and dazed by appalling poverty, the little people yearn for some of the beauty, some of the comforts, some of the luxuries of the upper class.

Could we then suggest that we are witnessing firsthand in Pakistan a classic struggle between haves and have nots? Perhaps so but with a caveat; unlike the past struggles, religion is being used, or misused, in this particular one like never before.

Devoid of a platform to launch its struggle from, a group of disenchanted people has come up that exhorts to kill and be killed in the name of God. A death-worship is engraved on young impressionable minds in the name of a deity that craves blood. Like drill instructors, the handlers of these young men constantly bombard them with sermons like, “How sweet is the fragrance of the martyrs, how sweet is the scent of the earth, its thirst quenched by the gush of blood, flowing from the youthful body.” The result; more than five hundred people have been killed and maimed in Pakistan just in the first two months of this year.

Let it not be said, however, that Islam is the only religion that has been, or is being, misused to this end. There are quotes galore from other sacred texts that glorify the act of human sacrifice. The Bible, for example, alludes to ancient cultures of the Land of Israel: “Their sons and their daughters they sacrifice to their Gods” [Deut: 12]. The Israelites too were drawn to it: “And they built altars to give their sons and daughters to Molech which God did not command nor consider this abomination [Jeremiah: 32].” As recently as 500 years ago, certain South American tribes used to leave children to die on mountain tops as presents to their gods. The common denominator driving human sacrifice, in short, is the belief that the deity craved blood.

With each violent incident, the powers that be huddle down. Unable to catch the perpetrators and blinded by a ‘rightful’ rage, they see no option but to centralize ever more force into the hands of those who govern unelected. This results naturally in even more despotic governance that strikes at all who resist, all who complain. It in turn invites yet another backlash from the reactionaries who care a naught for their own or others’ lives with the spiral of violence ultimately spinning out of control.

Nothing will change in Pakistan without the fundamental understanding of a simple fact by its opinion makers that only political freedom can rid Pakistan of its present menace. It has to be recognized that the structure of a society built upon wrong basic principles is bound to retard the development of all men, not just the underdogs’. It must be grasped that public rights rest essentially on liberty, whose morals and religion in due course evolve in the same direction. And nations are not free unless men, under the floodlights of a media that is able to zoom into the most obscure corners of power, start framing and executing laws that represent the interests of the lives of the people and not the interests of some distant masters.

If we want terrorism to end in Pakistan, we have to condemn with loud voices, open speech and fearless thinking as much the terrorists as the system that spawns them. For finally in Pakistan a time glowing with new ideals, new hopes of true democracy seems to have arrived.

In the end it must be said that NOTHING, repeat NOTHING, justifies the killing of an innocent human being, be he a victim of the terrorists or the state.

End of terrorism

Good to see that Pakistanis started talking about end of terrorism, though only after the fire of terrorism started burning their own fingures.

The West

How well you know us, Mr. Rahim.

You're right, I'm quite sure of it.

INDIA Source of terrorism in the region

Stop the hype and lies. You cannot fool the world anymore. It is an established fact that INDIA is the prime source and author of terrorism in S. Asia for the last 50 years. It was Indian state sponsored terrorism in E. Pakistan that resulted in breakup of Pakistan. Today when un-circumsized Mullahs behind the suicide bombings in Pakistan are being arrested and Indian citizens and RAW agents who bombed and killed Pakistani's are facing public execution and catching global attention, it's funny to see a citizen of a terrorist state preaching morality and nobality.

If you are sincere about ending terrorism take up that cause in the terrorist state of India first as it is radiating 360 degrees of terrorism in the region and countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and now Tibet are realing under it's state proliferation of terrorism. Charity begins at home.

Now is the tiem...

Now is the time to prove to the country and the people one thing and only one thing "UNITY" for the sake of mother of all good things can be brought to the nation.
Pakistani people and leaders need to leave hitrate and devisions behind them and now is the time. Devisions will break Pakistan into peices that can't be bonded. The civil war, the loss of Pakistans pride of defense will be among those coming first. The enemy is looking for those vacumes to go after Pakistan and the leaders must not make that happens. Mrs. Bhutto lost her life for unity. She was under house arrest but did not for a moment forgot her country or the people. Mr.Musharaf saved the father of Pak. Nuclear I.Q.Khan who was badly wanted by the enemy, I gave him the credit. I think Mr. Musharaf, Mr. Sharif and Mr. Gilani can united and lead Pakistanis toward a beautiful tommorrow. Good luck Pakistan!

Charity begins at home.

"Charity begins at home" well said Mr. S.iqbal. We indian believe in this saying " What goes around comes around". Just try to look at the background of terrorism in honest and a cool mood and I'm sure you you will withdraw your alligations. If you remember recently your friend country US put pakistan at top of the list of ten worst nation of the world.

Stopping the Suicide Bomber

I doubt if there is any system which spawns terrorists or suicide bombers. Why some individuals go to the extend of blasting themselves and so many other innocents? This question no one can answer, even the researchers do have different views on this subject. A rich man from Saudi Arabia having no problem to feed himself or his family would blow himself up, why? Some say that they are brainwashed and given the hope that they will go to heavens or paradise. But there are many suicide bombers who do not believe in any religion but still carry out suicide bombings. May be its a wave of such brutal activities and in time will end. Picking on India might not be right and blaming is too much though they do have terrorism in their own country in the East and also other places. No doubt India did sponsor terrorism in East Pakistan and that caused breakaway from West Pakistan. If India is doing some of it then they got to change their course and devote their resources some where else. No good playing with danger one day it might engulf the entire India as there are many who would like to be free from majority Hindus. it's amazing to see that once a terrorist state is quiet and preaching morality and nobility. Pakistan has become a second country with such menace and surely government is working on it how to eradicate the evil from that soil. There is always a hope that suicide bombers will do something worthwhile for the mankind and not to kill others who done no harm to them.

Loose Regimes

As far as these loose regimes remain in power troubles will prevail. They are not only deceiving the westerns but also their own folk. They can not take a concrete step for peace and even not are able to talk openly to the foreign powers.
All that is the sown fruit of the reaped western democratic system that brings the power shared into many a parts with no stable central authority. Also with the wrong and weaker governing like a game of children where every group denies the other and marks as heroes those who had been formerly offenders of the state. Similarly, The ceremonies of Bhutto family are also likely to get into an official decree.

Taming the monster

Vigourous young people brainwashed by patriotism is one thing and religious zeal is the other. They rarely exist together. While contemporary patriotism has also dwindled universally to almost extinction, neo-patriotism has liberated into smaller boundaries of various other than national definitions. To kill humans for protecting humane virtues, is like expecting chimpanzees to teach man on space conquer. Likewise, to expect terrorism to find its own killing vaccine, is completely going out of minds.

Once ignorance was a bliss but today, it is being bred and nurtured by the satanic forces in man through highly volatile media explosion hijacked by vested interests. Irresponsible media intoxicated by quick-buck infusion in trade, exaggerate atrocities of a a few small time criminal groups to taint every bonafide struggle for coexistence. Current universal crisis of terror has been covertly created by those, who have no respect for human values against money because such crises create unlimited opportunities to exploit terror to make easy money. Therefore such anti-human forces are breeding situations which make a terrorist out of every foreign visitor from a Muslim country. They purposely sow the seeds of despair, arrogance, ignorance etc. and grow hostile sprouts of angry frustration in youth of the divided communities, almost certainly, on religious lines. They aggravate hostilities in these young misguided people by giving them highly unequal and biased projections in comparison with their more opportuned contemporary in the " greener pastures" of their own lands, which they shamelessly claim to present having equal opportunities for all. These are the factors, any combination of which can trigger the birth of, hydra-headed monsters of suicide-bombers, the ultimate weapon of mass terror production.
It is not difficult to understand, if we really want that, to eradicate terrorism, we shall have to start from its roots. As a first step, we shall have to divert attention of the monster onto other much more attractive bites to try its jaws on. If given opportunities to divert its energies elsewhere, the monster van be led into a safer and closed environs, away from causing harms to humanity. Open and fearless thinking is required to develop means and devices to tame and chain the monster as much, as the system that spawns it. One of such devices could be, establishment of gainful employment of their energies and resources in other than terror activities. This would require, turning their own faith into a productive force, rather than a tool of mass destruction..

Finally in Pakistan, a time glowing with new ideals, new hopes of true democracy seems to have arrived. If it can find its senses and gather its minds in joining forces to make a road map to recovery, there is no doubt that, it will find ways and means to tame the terror and make a productive use out of its, by employing its raw powers of youthful plenty.
In the end it must be said that NOTHING, repeat NOTHING, justifies the killing of an innocent human being, be it a terrorist, or the state, for ANY reason.
