Sixth anniversary of 9/11

07 September, 2007

By Huzaima Bukhari & By Dr Ikramul Haq

The unprecedented and unthinkable terrorist attack on the United States six years ago had shaken the entire world. The tragic event raised some important questions about the future shape of world society. In the wake of this ghastly tragedy many thinkers expressed serious apprehensions of eventual loss of freedom by man in the days to come, which has proved to be true. The world since then has changed for the worst.

Terrorism like fascism is a self-destructive ideology and we cannot fight terrorism unless we understand it. Too much reliance on military might and invincibility of air strike power will not help a country win the war against something that relates to human culture, behaviour and ideology—right or wrong is another issue.

Use of brutal and ill-directed force against a few groups, dubbed as terrorists by the United States and some of its allies, without eliminating the causes that compel them to turn to "terrorism", is proving to be a self-defeating exercise since 9/11. The only effective method to eliminate terrorism, for the West in particular, is to meaningfully address its root causes, end poor people's exploitation and deprivations, and help create a humane and just society in the Less Privileged World.

Mere use of force is not the answer and is bound to provoke more terrorist acts around the world. The incidents in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Spain, London, Pakistan, Russia, main land Europe and elsewhere show how use of force is instigating more terrorism. Resort to pre-emptive strikes by the state authorities is only a short-term, not the real solution. In the long run, the governments will have to sit down and chalk out a comprehensive strategy to ensure that the enemy is dealt with a strong hand without disturbing the peace and tranquillity of individual societies and the world as a whole.

Ironically, the most important question thrown up in the aftermath of 9/11 is whether we are turning averse to freedom or want to protect it for our future generations. The recent terrorist attacks were a strike against freedom but at the same time were an outcome of arrogant attitude on the part of those who claim to be self-appointed guardians of faith and freedom. In a unipolar world, it is the responsibility of the United States and western democracies to assure the rest of the world that the absolute power in their hands does not mean high-handedness towards others. The mankind, after suffering much turmoil and bloodshed for a long period, has learnt to live with the principles of economic liberalism, political democracy, religious freedom and individualism. But certain forces having vested interest are trying to push the mankind back towards the Dark Ages when there existed no fundamental rights and it was an authoritarian rule.

There are debates inside the US and elsewhere pinpointing the erosion of civil liberties on a massive scale taking place in the name of defending the Frontiers of Freedom. Terrorism surfaced as a reaction to growing "fascism" on the part of certain states but it is a human problem which needs to be understood. Only if we are willing to understand the behaviour pattern of those who turn to terrorism, that we can come closer to identify the reasons for rising phenomena of fascism, fanaticism, fundamentalism and terrorism, which includes state terrorism.

The economic imbalances within a society and from global perspective, revival of so-called religious movements (with political overtones) and imposition of will of the mighty on the weak have all given rise to what came out in the shape of 9/11 in 2001 and events thereafter which have created worldwide turmoil and reign of fear. Freedom of expression per se has been considered a sufficient fulfilment of the pre-requisite to achieve a democratic society. The fallout of this fulfilment appears to be a misconceived notion on the part of individuals and groups that freedom of speech ipso facto gives them an authority or a license to impose their own ideas on others by using money, power and physical force as the means. They are not only intolerant towards others' views but also suffer from the illusion that their ideas are the only truth through which the world can be changed into an ideal place.

The terrorists think they are on the right path and the state establishments whose interests they strike at are committed to eliminate them. Neither side is ready to open a dialogue. This state of affairs has led to a perpetual confrontation. In all the affected areas in the world the main reason for unresolved disputes is this stubborn attitude on the part of the parties in conflict. Lack of will and rationality on the part of the powerful sates to be fair towards the powerless has converted our world into a place full of misery, destruction and unhappiness.

The frustration of the powerless gets its vent in ghastly acts of terrorism and destruction. If we want to change this situation drastically, a balance has to be struck between the powerful and the powerless. If a large majority of the world population lives permanently in a state of backwardness, those in power will always remain the target of hatred and attack. The big powers want to dictate and rule the world according to their own perceptions.

This authoritarian approach on the part of the powerful and resort to imposing economic sanctions on the weak is most illogical and irrational way to fight a war against fundamentalism and terrorism. The oppressed and powerless have their way of reacting, which by no means can conform to the norms of behaviour practised or advocated by those in power. Our world is fast becoming an authoritarian state reminiscent of fascist systems of the last century practised in Germany and Italy where the dominant role of authority in social and political matters rested with the dictators. The revival of authoritarianism in the name of security needs is a step towards fascism. On global level, there are now open expressions of superior and inferior states and blind admiration of the unipolar power. This is like pushing the entire world to Ground Zero. In devising military strategies to fight the forces of fanaticism and terrorism, the people at the helm of affairs should not overlook the human aspect of the whole problem.

Freedom and democracy are inseparable. The right to express our opinions clearly means that we do have our own opinions on vital issues of concern to us. If the media and state machinery is shaping the opinion of everybody then where is freedom of expression? If one does not have his own thoughts, then how will democracy be practised? If the shape of the world is to be determined by a handful of people having known economic interests [who want to grab oil and get political maps right?] then of what need is freedom to the common man? When we are remembering many innocent people who became victim of wanton attack of 9/11, there is skepticism and cynicism towards everything.

The future of freedom and democracy is at stake. Looked at superficially, people in various societies may appear to be having a satisfactory economic and social life: yet it would be dangerous to overlook the deep-seated unhappiness behind that comforting veneer. The despair that prevailed in New York after the 9/11 tragedy was not an isolated individual experience of a community. It was felt by the whole world and the dominant thought was loss of freedom at individual level inflicted by certain political forces that lacked sanity and respect for human life. Those who are countering it with military might are equally mindless of the fact that suppression of individuals and governments cannot bring to then any victory against terrorism. Erich Fromm in his ‘Fear of Freedom’ rightly concluded, "The victory over all kinds of authoritarian systems will be possible only if democracy does not retreat but takes the offensive and proceeds to realize what has been its aim in the minds of those who fought for freedom in the last centuries”.

It will be a triumph over the forces of nihilism only if it can imbue people with a faith that is the strongest the human mind is capable of, the faith in life and in truth, and in freedom as the active and spontaneous realization of the individual self". The same is true for victory against terrorism. In order to achieve it, the people will have to unite and convince the fellow human beings of faith in life, freedom and truth as the active and spontaneous realization of individual self. This is, however, possible only in a world that is free of authoritarianism, exploitation and injustice.

Z Billo, United Arab Emirates - 08 September, 2007

Six years after 9/11

Can a man unable to express himself clearly in English, do what we are being made to believe? Is it possible for such a person to employ delicate computer applications and plan something without being detected? From sheer magnitude of work involved, it is humanly impossible for one person to plan and execute 31 terror attacks as stated, without being detected by the top detection agencies of the world having means to detect hostile extra-terrestrial objects in space, threatening life on earth from a distance, hundreds of billion miles away and developing means to safeguard the world from their possible dangers in future.
The confession statement of Sheikh as released by the US media, appears to be a calculated effort to put the entire blame on a single culprit and get rid of the whole terror. Can the world be cleared of its ills and crimes by embodying them into a single soul and incinerating it? Too much of fiction to believe.

I strongly feel that, love is stronger than hate. Terror is a product of fear which in turn gives birth to hate. Terror can only be eliminated by creating an atmosphere free from hate and fear.Undoubtedly, the CIA is a name which is synonymous with hate and fear and therefore, can only create and aggravate terror. The world is well aware of its Charter and could hardly do anything to counter its inhuman efforts, to enslave entire humanity for the service of the hegemonic power.

Anger is a result of Adrenalin, a chemical produced in brain as a result of mental activity preparing the body for protection against all sorts of aggressions. Under prolonged onslaught, Adrenalin temporarily freezes all other faculties of brain and concentrates energies only to fight aggression. Under such situations, when human mind becomes uni-directional, the man tends to be more animal than human. Degree of civilization cultured in a man determines the extent of his leaning towards animal instincts in anger.

With above explanation, it is easy to understand that, an angry man is not completely sane. Therefore, un-controlled anger which sheds the human virtues, bringing out animal in man, is considered betrayal to the virtuous blessings bestowed upon him by the Creator, can be led to use its "animal power".

The term, "weapons of mass destruction" has been transformed. Initially, it evoked the grave danger of the repeat of the 9/11 trauma. But now it evokes an apparently calculated American fear. The US government had developed through its various agencies, explicit evidence defining a threat that required the launching of preventive war and the US media trumpeted such evidence without hesitation. Since there were no weapons of mass destruction, which the US government and its pliant press had ample reason to know, was an institutionalized deceit maintained to this day, to achieve its designed aims, necessarily ulterior for the outside world. At the United Nations, the U.S. misled the world. In speech after speech, President Bush misled his nation. And, it is to be noted that, the word "misled" means both to have falsified and to have failed in leadership. According to an American think-tank, "--- terror attacks are "CIA creatures" and we should expect that the CIA knows its creation earlier than attackers".In all likelihood, the CIA also controls the so-called ‘warnings' emanating from CIA sources on "future terrorist attacks".

When will the world rise from its slumber to know the real designs against it.

Poor people

Those who are associated with terrorist activities are not poor. It is the violent ideology they follow, that is causing problem. Poverty does not bring violence. It is the value you get from your parents, elders, friends, society that dictates you moral and intellectual shape. Many poor people, with their ability and effort has created lasting impression on humanity.

As I Face the Terror-Fritz again...!

It is said that "powerlessness frustrates and absolute powerlessness frustrates absolutely; absolute frustration is a dangerous emotion to run a world with." Sometimes I wonder why I am so restless, why I cannot cease thinking! It seems like the world we live in reveals to us incessantly, at certain moments or in certain circumstances, just how little we are and how vast the universe is. This world of ours is a very complex world. The world we live in is a world of many brutal voices. It is a world of heavy blows and delirious trances, but it is the only world that we know.
As Americans prepare themselves to remember and honor the victims of the Islamic terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, life reminds us all how vulnerable we really are. On that day, the world we live in appeared an obscure and dull place, filled with pockets of disasters where men are easily the victims.
The tragic and catastrophic events of September 11, 2001 have affected me tremendously. I felt a temptation to scream and run to the end of the world and say my prayers with unusual earnestness and a heavy heart. I felt like screaming for the overflowing flood of human blood. I felt like screaming for the weary eyes and innocent moans of the victims’ families. I felt apprehensive, anxious, and fearful. And now, as I take up my pen, my hand trembles and my head swims with horror and disbelief at the magnitude of the human devastation. Yet, the world will go on as usual.
During the events of September 11, 2001, Americans stood still and watched the most horrific events unfolding right in front of their eyes. They were very traumatized by the events. Many people came and told the reporters of how they saw the flesh on dead people and they were so scared. Americans watched, prayed and hoped, searching for an answer, a comfort and strength to pass those tumultuous moments. September 11, 2001 proved, unlike anything else in recent American history, that everyday people do extraordinary caring things. September 11 was the day that ordinary people became heroes. Heroes appear when circumstances call upon them. Heroes are those extraordinary people who make sacrifices and become agents of historical and social change.
When disasters occur, our minds pass through many stages of inner development. We sometimes speak of other forces that rule the world. The tragic event of September 11 left thousands dead and hundreds more wounded and put a nation into mourning. It was a heavy blow to humanity from the “religion of peace.”
There is nothing inherently wrong with religion. Religion can be a tremendous force for the good. However, when religion, this feeling-based belief, is filled with superstition, intolerance and hatred, then the beholder of that religion embodies those qualities and becomes a veritable menace to the self and to others. Feelings energize actions. Destructive feelings energize destructive actions.
Muslims living in theocratic states, in particular, tend to be victims of their religious brains. Their religious brains are indoctrinated, from the moment of birth, by an extensive ruthless in-power cadre of self-serving mullahs and imams who are intent on maintaining their stranglehold on the rank and file of the faithful—their very source of support and livelihood.
The mullahs and imams, as well as parents and others, envelop the receptive mind, feed it their dogma, and shield it from information that may undermine or falsify their version of belief.
For as long as there are bigoted, self-serving clergy and their collaborators with exclusive access to the blank slate, the problem of supplying wave after wave of Islamofascists will persist. It is the brain/mind that assesses things, makes decisions, and orders actions. To the extent that the in-place software of the religious brain is exclusionary in nature, hateful in orientation, and violent in tendency, the individual is both the perpetrator and the victim of barbaric acts.
What we need to do is to learn our lessons from the September 11 tragedy; learn more of the unethical depths to which human beings may fall and how we can prevent such tragedies from happening again. We need to educate ourselves about Islam, radical Islam and Islamofascism.
The surest way of dealing with Islamofascism is through the effective inculcation of religious software that promotes tolerance of diversity, freedom of faith and conscious goodwill to all, as well as the purging of all the vile and discriminatory dogma that permeates the out-dated primitive belief of some 1400 years. The best place to start is clearly the home, then schools, and mosques where the deeply-entrenched mullahs and imams of vested interest must be compelled by law to refrain from preaching messages of hate and violence against the unbelievers.

Shokat Saleem, Georgia - 11 September, 2007

Wake up who are you fooling.Shaukat Saleem

Shaukat Saleem,After reading your letter I think neither you live in Germany nor this is your real name.
In US from where you are you would know the level of hatred and intolerance white christians have towards others. There are many clergies who constantly speak venom and hatred on radio openly against Islam and muslims, there is new report that Pentagon is asking its soldiers to do the work of evangelist in Iraq.I mean even vultures would wait until someone dies but these people can't.So it is better you stop giving lectures to muslims if you have some knowledge of the world we live in and the role the super powers have played. In US even today a black is afraid to go in areas where pure white people live(yes and they are devout christians.).This is not so in Pakistan. This is new agenda of US to mould Islam into christianity style meaning all talk and all hate and all exploitation.INcreasing knowledge is never bad.
Visit www.whatreallyhappened.com and read "Lie of the century" and about 9-11 on the left.or visit www.informationclearinghouse.info and search 9-11 and you get host of info. Also visti www.twf.org and read at blog. One should have all sides of the story before one talks.

Jaidi, United Kingdom - 13 September, 2007

culture of resistance

I learned that a blow which doesn't kill you makes you stronger .Taliban survived Tora Bora and worser .It is clear to me that if the US is not ready to stay in Afghanistan in de next 50 years they have a big probleem .A probleem because ounce Jihad declared a Muslim can only win (die or kill:martyr or winner).Taliban has caves in which you can walk or navigate in for days .They will win .Islam will win .

nouressine, Pakistan - 14 September, 2007

More details missing.

Your article is good one but would have been better if you have touched on the questions that have arisen from 9-11 yet not answered.,eg.How could building #7 fell on its feet when no plane hit it.How could burning on the top floor made the lower collapse in feww seconds. It never happened in the world.
Also How come a second before the attack no one knew about its happening but then how come a second after attack every one in Govt suddenly knew even the identity of all the attackers. And certainly US history is full such deciets. The attacks on Peral harbour and on tonkin Gulf were manufactured to justify starting wars and attacks, first one on Japan and second one on Vietnam.Western civilizations have thrived on lies and exploitations. Why the 911 would be different?.It opened the huge market fro surveylance and spying gadgetry,It opened justification for running over Iraq, and Afghansitan all after the planning of remappaing of middleeast, and plans for constant conflicts. Also justification for creating and supporting dictatorships in muslim countries. It increased the workability in quantity and quality(openly) in muslim countries.Reasoning and logic is not understood by powers, this has been the lesson of the history.
But it was a good article.
