Barely six years have elapsed since President Bush took office and the much coveted 21st century belongs to America is about to come to an abrupt end. America's pre-eminence in four corners of the world is being challenged by friends and foes alike.

In America's own backyard "Latin America"Venezuelan President Hugo Chᶥz is spear heading a crusade to undermine US interests across the region. He has successfully garnered the support of the leaders of Cuba, Bolivia and Ecuador to propagate his cause.  Together they have challenged American supremacy by embarking on a campaign to reclaim oil and gas fields fromwestern companies and put them directly under state control.

Across the Atlantic, Europe smitten by the Iraq war and deeply hostile to the unilateralist agenda of the Bush administration, has at best offered nominal assistance. Rather, given the opportunity the Europeans'notably the French, the Germans and the British have behaved more as foes than American allies.  French intransigence in Lebanon, Europe's refusal to commit significant troops to Iraq and Afghanistan, Britain's interference in Palestine, and French and British hostility towards a Darfur settlement have damaged America's standing in the world and eroded her legitimacy.

Russia and China subdued by twenty or so years of American power have reawakened to counter American inspired revolutions sweeping Central Asia. Uzbekistan returned to Moscow's sphere of influence, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus successfully thwarted US backed uprisings; America failed to press home the political gains made in Ukraine, and Georgia witnessed a severe backlash from Russia over its ties with Washington.

Furthermore, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan the minnow states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) have become emboldened enough to demand withdrawal of American bases. America's gains in this region almost stand to naught.

Worse still is that the war on terror has inadvertently solidified China's relationship with Russia"undoing years of American strrategic planning" to keep the two erstwhile enemies apart. The China-Russian alliance reinvigorated with economic growth and a common desire to see a bipolar world has spread its tentacles across the globe harming US interests.

Russia unfazed by American threats is equipping Venezuela and Iran with modern weaponry. Chinese energy companies are signing oil deals in places that have traditionally been the preserve of American oil giants. In the Middle East, both Russian and China have taken strong objection to America's position over Iran. On the Korean peninsula, Beijing's unfettered support for Pyongyang has exposed Washington's inability to prevent North Korea from becoming nuclear.

Throughout the Muslim world America's credibility has plummeted to an all-time low. The ferocity of the resistance in Iraq and Afghanistan has broken the back of the US army and forced President Bush to abandon his plans to advance democracy. Bush unable to extricate America from Iraq and Afghanistan has had to revert to the "Truman Doctrine" and seek the help of secular autocracies like Syria, Iran and Pakistan. Instead of reshaping the Muslim world in America's image, the nefarious policies of the Bush administration has Islamised the region, politicised the Muslim masses to awaken from their spiritual slumber and galvanised the Muslim intelligentsia into a powerful force for political Islam" to sum up the last six years" it is suffice to say that America is precipitating the birth of the Caliphate.

After two decades of dominating world affairs, America finds itself at the mercy of her friends and enemies. Graham Fuller former vice chairman of the National Intelligence Council described America's predicament correctly when he wrote in the latest issue of the National Interest, "diverse countries have deployed a multiplicity of strategies and tactics designed to weaken, divert, alter, complicate, limit delay or block the Bush agenda through death by a thousand cuts."

So what happens after America has fallen from its perch as the world's sole super power Europe is too divided to take up the mantle of the leading state. Russia has yet to translate her economic strength into political capital to position herself as the pre-eminent power. Both China and India lack the political will and the experience to affect world politics. For the foreseeable future, both countries will be confined to their respective spheres of influence.

The country that wishes to supplant America must possess a huge population, abundant resources, a universal ideology and the political will to succeed. The most obvious candidate is the Muslim world under the Caliphate, which Bush has often spoken about.

End.

Future for Muslims/Islam

With due respect I differ from Mr.Mustafa in few points.I think the statement that American Empire is about to crumble is only a propaganda by Americans.Americans are well experienced in robbing and killing humans for over 3 centuries.British before that. Now Americans did this with local Indians, then slaves from Africa then South American countries and now with the muslim world. As always there had been a genuine reason portrayed to continue this, wether it was "manifest destiny" meaning God's given right to white race to rule world and civilize them. And now the cover is fighting terrorism, while actually many problems in the world can be solved by reasoning and logic.Rumsfield said war on terrorism will continue for 50 years, others in adminstration say few generations,Blair said twenty years and these statements are recent.THere is a big difference in Whites and browns, whites will first do the work then say or even suggest, while brown esp muslims will start making grandiose claims while the project may not even have been thought from all angles.Pakistanis are even worse, this can be called "Bardak" culture, try to read the word in Punjabi. You got it.
Yes the tragedy has been when communism collapsed due to muslims effort(thus making US number one power)Islam should have entered in the vacuum but capitalism entered and capitalism(Called economic exploitation)comes with its culture of making people self centered, selfish enough that the elite class doesn't care about suffering and dying of less fortunates.Islam opposes this so is target of the war(using superficially words like terrorism to garner the support of Idiot rulers in muslim countries,Like military rulers whose uniforms doesn't look much different than thaose of band masters).Muslims will gain respect only when they will individually improve themselves in quality, meaning education, income helping each others and collectively when muslim countries will have a system which enforses merit and chokes crimes and corruption.WHen will that happen in Pakistan,I think probably never,Band masters have money for every thing except in effort to implement merit.

At least someone has the sense of reality.

Keep on dreaming ......

Good Joke.. Nice to read.. but keep it short next time...Give me 10 nobel prize winner's name from the Caliphate that's going to be a future super power.. and does that country ( or Caliphate or whatever)have people having enough sense not to damage their own properties while demonstrating against some silly things. Again.. good joke.. keep it up.. its not bad to dream big..keep dreaming!

Don't think so!

I don't think it wise to think that its's time for the''american empire'' to fall down...nah..not that early...because if an empire or simply a nation is to fall ,,another must rise somewhere...you know..a two way process which actually is not the case here..and being a Muslim, would definitely see the Muslims as that ''other nation'' who actually are ''still sleeping'...

Four super powers by 2050

If you study the history of all previous sole super powers(Persian, Roman, Ottoman and British), after about sixty years being in sole super power status, the grand empires reverted back to super power status. There have been three stages of 60-70 years for all i.e super power-sole super power and back to super power again.

America won't fall, but it will be dethroned from sole to super power status.

Energy resources and population will be the key criteria of other rising stars.

Before 2050, America will be one of four super powers and they will be US, China, Russia and Iran. Russia and Iran will be there because of enormous energy resources and Iran's populaion will be well over 200 million people with the world's largest hydrocarbon resources of combined oil and gas(equivalent of 400 billion barrels including gas).

Iran has plans well under way to triple its gas production to 8 trillion cubic feet per year and double its oil production to
over 7 million bpd.It will have magic 10 of energy well in sight before 2020 i.e production of 10 trillion cubic feet of gas a year and refining or production of 10 million bpd oil per day.America and Iran will be the only two countries to have magic 10 of energy by 2020 in both oil and gas. China will have it in oil refining and not in gas, whereas Russia will have it in gas and not in oil refining.America and Iran will enjoy magic 10 in both oil and gas and America will have it from imports requiring military defence all the time to protect it.Russia has bounced back quite a bit due to income from energy.

The status won't change by use of force. Super power status will be all energy resource based. America has two internal drags to pull it down and they are both accelerating now. One is the monetary imbalances, deficits and living on borrowed money. Britain went exactly through same thing when queen Victoria of sole super power Britain never balanced her budget even one year through her long rule. The result was evident. Britain was a super and not sole one by 1880. Germany and America and perhaps Russia and France were super powers as well. The second drag for America and growing very rapidly is the incresing population share by good time Latin culture creeping in. Good time America of Spanish may drag America down.

And Shanghai accord can accelerate it if Russia and China keep on walking together with protection of Iran. They already are taking Iran related bite out over and over again.

They control more than half of world's gas resources between Russia and Iran.Energy insecurity and minority control on world's oil is building for the west again. With loss of Iraq, they will control only two (Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi) while other five mega energy rich nations alignment will be on the other side. Those othe five are Iran, Russia, Venezuela, Iraq and Kuwait while Iraq and Kuwait oilfields straddle into each other and can be accounted together.

A full blown military conflict is becoming increasingly difficult as America's adventure in Iraq has awakened and united Russia and China. Shanghai accord is increasingly becoming tough nut to crack for America.

And Latinos majority or sub majority will push for good time America rather than America of seriousness.

America not only could, but would slip to super power status after a normal run like all others on sole super powers run of the past. It will happen before 2050.

21at Century

Anything goes up comes down. US had its time and there will be a change in the world. Who will be the next its not going to be just one big power but there will be a few world players including Muslim countries as well. World is changing and 21st Century belongs to Asia where there are many a Muslim countries as well.

Islam's Awakening

China does not lack political will. They are competing with America on many levels, including for fossil fuels. In the early 1990's they leap-frogged ahead into second place behind America (leaving Japan in third place) in net import of fossil fuels. They are sustaining an economic juggernaut and have military troop strength.

2099

Not sure what the world will look like in 2099, but for next several decades it will probably be China and India that ascend most rapidly. It won't surprise if Islam makes steady gains in solidarity during the same period.

Paul, United Kingdom - 19 December, 2006

What a Joke!

I think the highly learned author has forgotten few important contenders in that list. Firstly, the exclusion of India which I think is due to the Authors anti India idealogy and also EU. Inclusion of Iran is nothing but good laugh.
