‘Image building exercise for Pakistan’

26 January, 2008

By Amjad Malik

Slain Chief Justice of Pakistan still under house arrest with his colleagues, incarcerated Supreme Court Bar President, one former Prime Minister dead and other in waiting with a serious threat to his life, media gagging, Constitution avenue blocked for public, access to Supreme Court with special permits, lay Pakistanis are without proper services of main utilities i.e. electricity, gas and oil and are fighting on streets for proper flour distribution is a picture a lay man draws of an atomic state of Pakistan in the wake of President Musharraf’s second leg of European tour to re build the image of Pakistan.

Pakistan is facing one of the worst internal stability questions despite having a strong visible army infrastructure which is capable enough to safeguard the exterior boundary of the country. Instead of offering trade on equality level, tourism, and security President Musharraf will be asking his counterparts to continue aid packages, have faith in him, and not to ask their citizens and businessmen to leave Pakistan due to law and order situation despite the fact, that suicidal attacks are almost a common occurrence and after 9 years of his unchallenged rule, he returns to square one which begs the critical analysis of the situation as  whether he is combating the increasing radicalisation in Pakistan or he himself is the cause of that increase as suicidal attacks are unprecedented in the 60 years history of the country. The fear is that radicalisation may increase while the weaker political set up runs the country, as it makes compromises with hardliners to make up for its lack of legitimacy. Only a civilian set-up can absorb these radical ideas, by addressing political issues through dialogue and stopping them from multiplying and simple democracy with justice where there is already a strong military present to safeguard the strategic assets can solve half of the problems in Pakistan.

In the whole power struggle, the common man is suffering and middle class conservatives are losing ground and patience too. The west, in Particular Britain must play its role to ensure free and fair elections in Pakistan under a credible caretaker set up with an Indian style fully armed & powerful election commissioner coupled with independent monitors. The sooner the nuclear-armed Pakistan returns to stage 3 process of democratic revival, the better it will be for the rest of the world as suicide attacks coupled with crisis over crisis whether its flour shortage or load shedding, oil or gas shortage, stock fluctuation or gulf between poor or rich, media gagging or judiciary’s bashing, draw a bleak picture of the state of affairs and it bottles down to mal administration and short sightedness of the regime where the country is internally jumping from one crisis into another whilst India is reaping the crop heavily from their miseries, and is safely sailing towards permanent membership of ‘National Security Council’ unchecked, and not alarmed at all.  British Prime minister Gordon Brown topped it all up by declaring India a strong partner in trade and a worthy future member of G8. India’s continuous progress is the key of its  public quietness on Pakistan’s internal affairs though contributing heaving in increasing  Pakistan’s miseries on its rear border with heavy presence of its diplomatic units actively busy, yet our rulers are busy in their contemplations whether BB was killed by a sniper, shrapnel or a car lever and should her killing investigation be done locally or through United nations or should it be shelved similar to that of  Liaqat Ali Khan, President Zia or Mir Murtaza Bhuttoo. Even if they get free from all these troubles, they keep are always busy in assessing whether Pakistani nation is ripe enough to make a fair choice of its leaders in an independent and fair polls.

One does not need to go abroad to preach the good of a country as actions speak louder than the words. Pakistanis are accustomed to clapping on fiery speeches, loud claims and prosperity dreams. However, when crisis hit the fan, all claims fall flat on the grounds as they are always without a substance, like the very claim of the President that ‘Pakistanis are eating cheapest flour in the whole of South Asia’ or ‘there is no crisis at all’ in Pakistan. I do share the view that these crisis may be minor, and may not pose any danger to state at all, however those who came to power to show lay politicians ‘good governance’ must come up to the task and must see the indefinite departure of their financial advisor Mr. Aziz as I believe those who deliver their promises return to parliament with 2/3 majority but they do not leave the country overnight for good. Ex servicemen have shown courage to share the views of millions of people of Pakistan who are silently witnessing the merciless treatment with the state brain just to save the clan of Q league and or the presidency, the seat of one man without caring the wider interest of the people, federation, and or state. The issue at front is how the President can contribute to the image of the country, the options are limited firstly, by remaining & attempting to preserve what he himself take credit of pre 9 March situation and holding free elections or alternately by resigning so he does not add further to the miseries of the victims of which army is on top of the list who have sacrificed many soldiers in these last years. Experience tells that in Pakistan we have not seen rulers ever resigning or admitting their mistakes as admitting fault is not their nature, though it is time to develop that culture.    We must concentrate as to what engulfs us as a nation, as resolving this situation is a critical question begging for our attention as we are at a ‘crossroad’ to move forward to prosperity or backwards towards Afghanistan. We must not forget that Caliph Omer showed how best to secure dispensation of justice, the idea which followed by West in making their societies just, equitable and social welfare states and the like of Khumaini of Iran who showed the simplistic way to serve its people who used to offer a loaf of bread with lentil to those visiting foreign dignitaries who came to see the man who changed the mind set of an entire nation.  How can our rulers sitting in million pounds bullet proof cars ever deliver the promise of democracy, accountability, and freedom.

People may remember our President with good words in future and it will lift our country’s image in the community of nations if at this juncture, he promotes public, judicial, and media accountability of our rulers and those who hold that accountability are properly regulated and administer their role fairly, justly and considering it their national obligation without a shred of doubt on the process they adopt. when our rulers say that we are new yet, and we need few hundred years to come at par with the democracy style of England, France and USA, it makes me wonder, as there is never a right time or right people available for the promise of democracy as if you wait for a promise of ‘never land’ it may never come true and now or never is the motto for revival of political process and democracy.  West learnt this tricks of trade from our ancient rulers how to share, how to provide justice at the strike of a bell,  equality of riding the camel with the servant, and simplicity of washing and sewing one’s own clothes and concept of social welfare state where rich cater the old and needy, but in order to achieve that one has to leave his luxury at some point and offer himself for public accountability in a style where people may ask a question , ‘Oh Omer, answer the people, where did you get your gown’

Indians are at pain!

I would like to share general feeling among majority of Indians who are following events in Pakistan. The recent events have surely brought pain and frustration to us. Watching the events from distance through filtered glasses of media ( free or otherwise) doesnt throw happy picture. We would like common Pakistanis to prosper in their personal lives, but this is unarguably linked to nation's health - politically, financially ! I would not like to lecture on democracy , secularism etc in India, but some fundamentals why is India where it is today. Indians generally tolerant to criticism ( most cases adopts non-violent form of dissent)in all walks of life, believes that freedom to make choices is fundamental to us. Pakistan also having similar genes , I m sure will trounce the present misery they are going through. Its people of Pakistan of Pakistan who will make difference at the end..its Janata and not Junta!

Islamic way of running a state

No surprise, the liberal, moderate and up to some extent secular Mr. Musharaf is impressed by the european ways of ruling country and in the last 8 years of his ruling time, unfortunately, he totally failed to prove himself a worthy person to rule this country.

In some of the previous columns of Mr. MAlik he has been continuously criticised for portraying and comparing British with Pakistan. But in this article he has probably proved his point very clearly that every european country and especially UK has established their system as per Islamic reforms and the example of Caliph Umer (Razi Allah Tala Anhu) is above all suspicions.

So, we all should requeste Mr. Musharaf to learn the Islamic History that he probably forgot to learn during his stay and getting education in Turkey, whose leader is his favourite leader, keeping in view the fact the ideal for every Muslim (After our Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad SAW) is Mr. Jinnah the founder father of this country. One simply can think of this old saying that ' Kawa Chala Hans Ki Chaal Apni Bhi Bhool Gaya'

Implement merit in every walk of life

SIngle best way to improve image in the world is to make Pakistani society with its citizens' survival ,growth, hiring ,firing etc etc all on merit and merit alone.Automatically when society changes, the productivity and progress will show faster and better. But this wouldn't happen because the army that runs the country despises merit in civilian life(in army selections are based by contacts, relations etc)because how could it then appoint its retired ,incompetent officers in highly competitive positions like,DGs,ambassadors, etc.
Change will come when all Pakistanis start to expose the corruption and incompetence imposed on the nation by military and start taking such retired appointees in courts.

freedom

Pakistan,
Please realize that we in America have heard about what you are going through. It's well known here that private owned news channels/newspapers are a source of biased information. The internet is where a vast majority find answers to our questions. After reading sites like ROOZ, MEMRI, Reporters Without Borders, Worldpress. org, yours, and many others, I must say that the paktribune has got me stuck in an antidruj train of thought. What I'm saying is that it's not your President that creates an image for Pakistan, it's you. This website and the bloggers of Pakistan have cemented in the minds of many the "image of pakistan". Forget foreign news media, we know it's angra mayu for wanting to get ratings. The image of Pakistan now and in the future is online. Please try to support your President, I know that your press is supressed, but I think your leader is trying to stop what the terrorists best weapon is. The internet. Please, for the time being, criticize in an honorable manner. Trust me, living in the U.S. and knowing it's history, it takes a long, long, time to be able to criticize your government like we do. Keep the faith.

asha, United Kingdom - 28 January, 2008

Media Blast.

I go along with the sentiments of Asha of United States of America. President Musharraf is a loyal and loves his country and its people, ITS YOU LOT who Write AGAINST HIM AND THE COUNTRY AND INSTEAD OF USING MEDIA AS A SOURCE TO EDUCATE AND GIVE CORRECT INFORMATION YOU USE MEDIA AS A MEDIA BLAST. BY EXAGERATING STATEMENTz AND FILING OF WRONG REPORTS AND ANTI PAKISTANIS PROPAGANDA YOU ARE THE ENEMY OF PAKISTAN NOT THE OUTSIDERS.Why blaming the government of all those voilent actions and burning of private properties in Pakistan. Who is breaking the law and order in Pakistan its You lot who are inciting public for your own benefits. Its the anti Pakistan Media who is to be blamed. A handfull of people are responsible for all what happened in Pakistan. When J. F. Kennedy was shot dead American public did not burn shops and looted the private properties why on the death of BB.??? Who was behind it. ? Why media did not play a responsible role and told the public that these things happen. Its a part of politics and death is certain whether with a bullett or by natural death. God has fixed the time for death and it was sad that BB was the next to go from the seen. People die all the time. What about all those who were killed the day BB was shot dead No one shed tears or offered much help for those who were left behind when bread winnere had gone. President Musharraf is not actually on a trip to build the image of Pakistan but to explore the trade and improve economic ties. NO one should be allowed to agitate and disrupt the peace in Pakistan no matter who he is, whether a politican or a retured SC Judge. All must remain within the lines of law and not to get themselves into trouble. Pakistan comes first and to keep it that way all should be loyal and not anti Pakistan.

Mohammad, United Arab Emirates - 28 January, 2008

Why blame India

I was with you Mr. Amjad Malik until you started to bash India for no reasons and no facts and I know why we do that in Pakistan- to gather attention in any way- and what a better way than to bash India. And any Image building would do nothing for Pakistan until we let go of our hate for India, which has been instilled by our leaders for their own gains.
It is unfortunate that Mr. Malik has not started to think outside the box ( the tribal kill each other thinking) after living long time in the U.K. China is also progressing very fast--why not blame China as well.

Two strong and prosperous neighbours like China and India would be lot better for us in long term than a demanding master like U.S.
I know we are Pakistanis but that shouln't stop us from thinking positive once in a while, Mr. Malik.

Image

Why people bother about image, if reality is different? You can not suppress the truth.

Nikus, Pakistan - 29 January, 2008

What image building?

What image building exercise? Western press is making mockery of Pakistan, its people and above all, its President. We Pakistanis must have some sense of resolve to first have a respectable national character, before even beginning to start thinking about any image building.

What the US media thinks about its own President, an IQ level 91person, lowest ever in their history, is well known. Even an average African American has an IQ very close at 85 ! A story published in New york times dated 7th Nov., 2007 which gives thinking of the US President about our President Musharraf, would be highly informative.

"Once I thought my daddy was a wimp for cuddlin’ up real close with dictators, tradin’ stability for freedom. But now I gotta admit, that’s a darn fair trade. As I told Mushy last night, the best hope for expanding peace is expanding dictators.
Sometimes when the soul of a nation speaks, we must listen. But if that soul is housed in a bunch of trial lawyers wearing identical dark suits and calling my man Mushy a “dog,” I say, bring on the batons. Police tear-gassing lawyers is really just a foreign version of tort reform, which I support. Those lawyers should be in jail. Mushy told me they were reckonin’ to represent Osama when he catches him. Which will be any day now. He’s a man of his word.
I don’t blame Mushy for dissolving that disloyal Supreme Court. When I needed to subvert the democratic process during the 2000 recount, my Supreme Court was totally supportive.
House arrest for that fired chief justice sounds very relaxin’, especially if he’s got a feather pillow.
I think Mushy should put Benazir Bhutto under house arrest in Karachi. They call her “a kleptocrat in an Hermès scarf.” I call her a chaos magnet. She’s slippery. One minute she’s overlooking Mushy’s flaws, the next she’s appalled by them. I’m not even sure what nickname to use. Her friends called her Pinky at Harvard and Bibi later. I think I like Pinky.
But I looked into Mushy’s eyes and saw a master, a man committed to helping us fight terror. And sometimes we must fight terror with tyranny. He promised me he’d be a more low-key autocrat, stop wearing that scary uniform — at least when he’s playing tennis.
From now on, it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of tyrannical movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending democracy in our world so liberty can thrive.
Condi was very worried about Mushy suspending the Constitution, but Vice says Constitutions are for sissies. He doesn’t see anything wrong with Mushy’s press blackout. He thinks we can learn a few lessons from him.
Vice says if we had someone decisive like Mushy in Iraq instead of those floppy Iranian puppets we put in power, we’d be a lot better off.
All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: the United States will ignore your oppression and excuse your oppressors. When you stand for your liberty, we will not stand with you.
The leaders of governments with long habits of control need to know: To serve your people you must learn to mistrust them. Stop your journey of progress and justice, and America will not only walk at your side, we’ll give you billions of dollars and lots of big-ticket stuff, like F-16s — no strings attached. And we’ll take you at your word that you have no intention of using them against India.
In the long run, there is justice without freedom, and there can be human rights once the human rights activists have been thrown in the pokey.
Three years ago, I believed that the most important question history would ask us was: Did our generation advance the cause of freedom?
But now I am older and wiser. I know that the most important question history will ask us is: What’s a little martial law between friends?"

M.Saeed, Pakistan - 29 January, 2008

Blame is on India

INDIA IS THE BIGGEST DANGER TO THE WORLD PEACE AND THE WEST.YOU BROUGHT INDIA IN AFGHANISTAN AND THE THINGS WERE SAILING SMOOTH BEFORE.

INDIA STARTED MEDDLING IN WESTERN TRIBAL AND NWFP OF PAKISTAN FROM AFGHANISTAN BY SENDING MONEY TO BLOW UP THE PAK MILITARY AND POLICE THAT WAS HELPING AND SUCCEEDING IN HELPING MITIGATE THE WORLD WIDE TERROR.

INDIA MEDDLED IN PAKISTAN WITH A WELL ORGANIZED PATTERN TO NERVE BREAK A COUNTRY BY ATTACKS ON POLICE TO BREAK THE COUNTERY PAKISTAN.

THESE INDIAN ACTS OF EXALTED NATURE ARE LIKE SHOOTING IN AMERICA'S AND NATO'S FEET AND POSING AS FRIEND IN AFGHANISTAN.

INDIA'S ACTS HAVE TAKEN ATTENTION OF PAKISTAN MILITARY AWAY FROM WAR ON TERROR AND ON TO MITIGATE PROBLEMS CAUSED BY INDIA'S BASTARLY MEDDLING INTO PLAN OF BREAKING UP PAKISTAN.

THIS WHOLE TRAITORING ACTS OF INDIA AGAINST PAKISTAN, AGAINST AMERICA AND NATO AND AGAINST ISLAMIC WORLD THROUGH OPEN ENDED INTRIGUES SPINNING ALL OVER IN THEIR CYBER NERVE AND REAL MONEY FACILITATED TERROR ACTS AGAINST PAK POLICE, PAK MILTARY AND PAK PEOPLE WILL HAVE DISASTROUS RESULTS FOR PAKS GREAT ALLIES AND FRIENDS IN AMERICA AND THE WEST.

INDIANS ARE THE BIGGEST DANGER TO THE WORLD PEACE. IF PAKISTAN GETS DESTABILIZED LIKE IRAQ, THE WHOLE MIDDLE EAST GETS DESTABILIZED.INDIA'S ENEMY LIKE TACTICS WILL CREATE ENERGY INSECURITY AND FINISH OFF THE ECONOMIES OF AMERICA AND EUROPE AND THE WORLD.THESE EVIL INDIANS WOULD DO ANY THING TO DESTROY PAKISTAN EVEN IF IT MEANS THE DESTRUCTION OF THE WORLD'S AND EVEN THEIR ECONOMIES.

INDIA HAS WORSE ENERGY IN-SECURITY HAUNTING ITS OWN SURVIVAL, BUT THEY WOULD'NT HESITATE DESTROYING EVEN SELF IF THEY CAN DESTABILIZE PAKISTAN.

I HAVE MY LIVING AND SOON MY PENSION FROM CANADA. I WANT TO SEE THE WEST PROSPEROUS AND NOT GET DESTROYED BY THE DASTADLY ACTS OF INDIA'S VICIOUS AND MALICIOS CAMPAIGN AGAINST ITS NEIGHBOUR COUNTRY. THESE AGGRESSIVE ACTS OF INDIA ARE REFLECTED IN THE INDIAN MEDIA'S RELENTLESS HATE AGAINST PAKISTAN AND AGAINST ANY THING THAT IS UN-INDIAN.

SO REIGN ON INDIA AND ONLY INDIA AND AMERICA, EUROPE, PAKISTAN AND THE ISLAMIC WORLD ARE ALL SAFE FROM INDIAN WOLVES.

Anwar Mahmood, Canada - 29 January, 2008

I totally agree with Arshad. How is this India's fault if pakistan is not able to keep its house in order. Mr. Malik do you see the point here, people can read between the lines.

India bashing...??, Pakistan - 29 January, 2008

Insane

Write with some logic. India has not provided arms or written islamic books or funded madrassehs. Whatever sin Pakistan has committed in tandem with USA and Saudi Arabia is haunting them back. India can sustain the bleeding though Russia was not able to do that. Europe, Japan, North America is not long term allies of India. They have independent media. It is your perverted mindset, which is bringing India in the picture.

Image Building---he has destroyed it all

I did'nt know we have any image left- so why bulid something non-existent.
The comments by Anwar Mahmood, Canada are not even worth commenting on--just childish--I sure hope I don't become like him after retiring.
But that is the mindset of some people here, who have been brainwashed.

Shamsuddin, Pakistan - 31 January, 2008

I think the canadian cold has seriously affected anwar mahmood's ability to think and lead a normal life. Its time he immediately seeks good medical attention.

aarvey, Hungary - 31 January, 2008

Malik is not completely wrong. India does exploit on the miseries of pakistan. The ordinary indian is no friend of pakistan . Neither is he a friend of the muslims. You have to only read the comments of some indian political leaders or political analysts
to understand their hate against the muslim world in general although millions of them profit immensely by working and living in the countries of the muslim middle east. Their preaching of hate and discrimination for the muslims of their own country is paradoxical when seen how they go about maintaining cordial relations with afghanistan and also muslim countries of central asia, south east asia etc. One finds this diplomacy both bizarre, hypocitical as well as opportunistic.

rezanno, United Arab Emirates - 31 January, 2008

Tell me Pakistani dudes- "How Pakistan move troops from Indo-Pak border and deployed them to fight insurgency?"
Certainly that wouldnt have been case if our force engaged yours at the border?
All we need to disrupt your quiet life is to deploy more army at border and thus forcing your military to retaliate thereby depleting your manpower against militants. So, instead of rhetoric, try to think and do something sensible that benefits your nation.

Abhilash, Hungary - 05 February, 2008

India has nothing to do with Pakistan, unless and until it stops creating problem for India.
Regarding Muslims in Middle East, they behave like what they should be (they are arabs and behave like Arabs). But, a person next your home starts behaving like Arab and adopts some culture, which is opposite to your 3000 year old tradition and culture, then you can to assimilate him/her in your society. It is not hate. It is separation.

Nikus, Hungary - 05 February, 2008

India not in picture

we should stop comparing ourselves with India in everything 'cause they have gained a significant lead over us in all areas ,when we were grappling with the political upheavels and islamization in the last 2 decades or so.In the future India may be a better ally of ours than US or even China.
